Course Overview
This course is designed to support those working as first line managers, section managers, assistant managers, trainee managers, senior supervisors, junior non-commissioned officers (armed forces) or other relevant management positions.
By studying the course, you will develop the essential knowledge and skills required to undertake management roles in a range of business settings. The areas covered in the course include planning, allocating and monitoring the work of the team, giving feedback, briefing teams, supporting team members, managing conflict, resolving problems, procuring supplies, project management, agreeing budgets and managing and improving customer service. There are no specific entry requirements however you should have a minimum of level two in literacy and numeracy or equivalent to study this course.
Specific assessment requirements: All questions in this course are tutor-marked questions. There is a requirement for you to be observed in the workplace and for them to complete the relevant documents through Expert Witness Testimonies to show they have covered the practical elements of the course in the workplace.
Please note: The course contains competence-based units, therefore you must be in a managerial position to enable assessment to take place and to allow for observations to take place to cover the competency criteria.

There are 5 mandatory units in the course, and 8 optional units to complete. You must achieve all 13 units to achieve the minimum of 55 credits:
Unit 1: Manage team performance
- Section 1: Understand the management of team performance
- Section 2: Be able to allocate and assure the quality of work
- Section 3: Be able to manage communications within the team.
In this unit, you will look at the use of benchmarking and quality management techniques in managing team performance. You will also learn about allocating and assuring the quality of work using quality standards and managing effective communication using various methods.
Unit 2: Principles of people management
- Section 1: Understand the principles of workforce management
- Section 2: Understand equality of opportunity, diversity and inclusion
- Section 3: Understand team building and dynamics
- Section 4: Understand performance management
- Section 5: Understand training and development
- Section 6: Understand reward and recognition.
In this unit, you will look at workplace planning and other principles of workforce management, as well as how equality of opportunity, diversity and inclusion can be promoted in the workplace. You will also learn about team building and effective team working, formal and informal performance management, different types of training and development, and pay structures and reward schemes.
Unit 3 – Principles of business
- Section 1: Understand business markets
- Section 2: Understand business innovation and growth
- Section 3: Understand financial management
- Section 4: Understand business budgeting
- Section 5: Understand sales and marketing.
In this unit, you will look at B2B and B2C markets and the legislation and obligations associated with business markets. You will also learn about business growth and innovation, as well as financial terminology and the importance of financial management. The unit will also cover different types of budgets, their uses and how to manage these, and the principles of marketing.
Unit 4 – Principles of leadership and management
- Section 1: Understand the principle of effective decision making
- Section 2: Understand leadership styles and models
- Section 3: Understand the role, functions and processes of management
- Section 4: Understand performance measurement.
In this unit, you will look at the principles of effective decision making, as well as different leadership styles and sources of leadership and power. You will also learn about different theories of motivation, the role, function and processes of management, and communicating effectively. This unit will also cover theories of management and how these guide a manager’s actions, as well as how to measure performance using performance measurement systems.
Unit 5 – Manage personal and professional development
- Section 1: Identify personal and professional development requirements
- Section 2: Fulfil a personal and professional development plan
- Section 3: Maintain the relevance of a personal and professional development plan.
In this unit, you will look at different sources of professional development and the advantages and disadvantages of these. You will also learn about personal development and how to conduct a skills gap analysis, as well as how to set SMART goals, gather feedback and undertake self-reflection.
Unit 6 – Chair and lead meetings (optional)
- Section 1: Be able to prepare to lead meetings
- Section 2: Be able to chair and lead meetings
- Section 3: Be able to deal with post-meeting matters.
In this unit, you will find out more about preparing to lead meetings, including any formal procedures and potential problems, and how to chair and lead meetings. You will also learn how to produce accurate records of a meeting, ensure that post-meeting actions are completed, and evaluate the effectiveness of a meeting.
Unit 7 – Manage individuals’ performance (optional)
- Section 1: Understand the management of underperformance in the workplace
- Section 2: Be able to manage individuals’ performance in the workplace.
In this unit, you will look at the causes of underperformance and how to address this, as well as agreeing SMART objectives with team members, delegating responsibilities, applying motivational techniques and monitoring individuals’ progress towards objectives.
Unit 8 – Manage conflict within a team (optional)
- Section 1: Understand the principles of conflict management
- Section 2: Be able to reduce the potential for conflict within a team
- Section 3: Be able to deal with conflict within a team.
In this unit, you will explore the principles of conflict management, including the potential consequences of unresolved conflict and the skills needed to deal with conflict. You will also learn how to reduce the potential for conflict in a team, as well as how to deal with conflict and the actions that may be taken.
Unit 9 – Promote equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace (optional)
- Section 1: Understand the organisational aspects of equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace
- Section 2: Understand the personal aspects of equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace
- Section 3: Be able to support equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
In this unit, you will look at equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace, including the potential consequences of breaching equality legislation. You will also learn about discrimination and harassment, as well as behaviour that supports equality, diversity and inclusion. You will explore how to identify potential issues relating to equality, diversity and inclusion and how to adhere to policies, procedures, and legal and ethical requirements.
Unit 10 – Prepare for and support quality audits (optional)
- Section 1: Understand the principles underpinning the management of quality
- Section 2: Be able to prepare for quality audits
- Section 3: Be able to support quality audits.
In this unit, You will look at the principles of quality management and the advantages and limitations of different quality techniques. You will also learn how to prepare for quality audits, including any necessary documentation, and how to support quality audits.
Unit 11 – Employee rights and responsibilities (optional)

- Section 2: Understand employers’ expectations and employees’ rights and obligations.
In this unit, You will explore the role of organisations and industries, including career pathways, principles of conduct, career pathways and issues of public concerns. You will also learn about employers’ expectations and employees’ rights and obligations.
Unit 12 – Health and safety procedures in the workplace (optional)
- Section 1: Know health and safety procedures in the workplace
- Section 2: Be able to carry out tasks with regard to health and safety in the workplace.
In this unit, you will look at the different health and safety procedures in the workplace and the importance of following these. You will also learn how to carry out a risk assessment, safely use equipment, prevent accidents in the workplace and assess their own health and safety practices.
Unit 13 – Manage individuals’ development in the workplace (optional)
- Section 1: Be able to carry out performance appraisals
- Section 2: Be able to support the learning and development of individual team members.
In this unit, you will find out how to carry out performance reviews and appraisals in the correct environment and provide feedback on these. You will also learn different ways to support team members’ learning and development, including the advantages and disadvantages of different learning methods.
